Spring Styling With Peta Preston

Personal stylist and image consultant Peta Preston loves nothing more than helping everyday women feel confident in their own skin. A graduate of the Australian Style Institute, Peta has helped countless clients of all ages rediscover their love for fashion by shedding light on everything from trends and silhouettes to what to look for when shopping.

Peta will share her styling know-how at an exclusive event featuring new footwear styles for the warmer months at Paul Carroll’s Burswood store on Thursday, September 6.

How did you discover your love for fashion styling?

My passion for fashion has existed for as long as I can remember. I love clothes, shoes, handbags, hats, accessories and all things beautiful. When I was a teenager, Mum often said “You could seriously shop for a living”. She obviously knew what I was destined to do!

Fast-forward more years than I care to admit and I am now a proud mother of two adorable children. Re-entering the daunting schoolyard as a mum, socialising with a multitude of people and listening to their fears, insecurities, needs and desires, completely opened my eyes and defined my purpose. Once I knew my purpose, I knew the role I could play to achieve it!

I love the effect a well-styled outfit can have on an individual. To be involved in the process of this beautiful transformation is so rewarding. I have been fortunate enough to find a fulfilling career whereby my genuine love for people, fascination with human behaviour and natural flair for fashion styling can co-exist.

What do you enjoy most about fashion styling and image consulting?

Shopping for a living is the best job ever, right? No, really… Fashion styling is more than choosing great clothes and keeping up with trends. Great styling is about me as a stylist understanding my clients’ individual body shapes and what garments are going to suit. It involves identifying their desires, fears and lifestyle needs. It’s about building their confidence – so they look good, feel great and have the self-esteem to achieve their own personal goals, not to mention become the envy of their peers!

What I love most about my job and never take for granted is being invited into a client’s wardrobe, which is a very personal space. There are always amazing stories associated with each and every garment purchased and I feel grateful they trust in me to share those stories and follow my directive regarding the culling process.

To make someone aware of their worth and to feel amazing in their own skin, is the best feeling ever!

What can Paul Carroll customers expect from your upcoming styling event?

Fun! Who doesn’t love shoes, a beautiful graze board and a glass of bubbles? They can expect a fun and informative night with live models showcasing the best of Paul Carroll’s Spring/Summer collection. I will be sharing my views on seasonal trends and throwing in some handy fashion tips and tricks along the way.

What are your favourite Paul Carroll styles for the warmer months?

There are so many! I love the new BeautiFeel Mystique. Curvy heels are a definite trend for Spring/Summer 18 so the Mystique heel is not only on-trend but also versatile, timeless and my pick for an all-round investment heel for the season that won’t date for many years to come.

Is it possible to be stylish at any age?

Absolutely! Why is it that when women reach a certain age they start to become fearful of their clothing choices? I think it is a series of rules that were trotted out to us by our mothers who heard it from their mothers, which very clearly stated that by the time you reached 40 you had to cut off your hair, fill your wardrobe with beige and never catch sight of your legs above mid calf again!

Luckily for us now, the fashion landscape has changed dramatically. Ninety per cent of my clients want to know how to avoid the ‘mutton’ tag but ensure they don’t look ‘mumsy’. It’s easy! You just need to follow three simple rules:

●  Avoid wearing anything too tight

●  Avoid flashing too much flesh

●  Avoid overdoing your makeup

●  The best accessory you can wear, is confidence

That’s it! Other than that, you can wear whatever you like but the most important advice I can give you is to make sure the styles you choose are right for your body proportions, shape and colouring (this applies whatever age you are).
